Office tale of Joren Joshua, illustrator & muralist

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :
Joren Joshua

Your current job :
Freelance illustrator & muralist

In which city are you located?
Rotterdam, The Netherlands

A word to define what kind of worker you are :
I have 2 sides. The thinker or the long distance train.

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)
Loads of paper, markers, spray paint, my macbook, scanner, photoshop.

What does your office space look like?
It’s one room for everything, my living room, bedroom and office. I have a lot of light coming from my big windows. With a little view on the water. I keep it sober with not too many stuff because I’m actually a litlle bit chaotic. So the main tool in my room is the big table.

What kind of music do you listen when you are working ?
Depends on my mood, in the morning I prefer radio. It feels like starting a real working day like people with a office job, haha. Later on I listen a lot to hiphop. But also a lot of other kind of music. A while ago I realized Arcade Fire is one of the bands I can always listen to.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work ?
I should make more to do lists. I just prefer having a deadline, in that case I just don’t stop before it’s fixed!

What tips would you give to improve productivity ?
Start early, throw away internet and don’t forget to go outside.

You’re better than your colleagues to :
I don’t like the word ‘better’. It’s more interesting to ask yourself: What is typical me? I think the caricaturale figures, graphic shapes and a sense of humor representing my work.

What is the best advice anyone has given you ?
Just go on!

What is your best tip for saving time ?
Starting early and keep your computer closed if you don’t need it.

What is your routine start and end of the day ?
Really important, the hot shower! After that I like drinking a coffee and start checking my mailbox. Than I start sketching with a little marker to create an idea and to warm up. The rest of the day depends on the jobs. I finish my working day most of the time with a beer and some chips or nuts.

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not you go without?
I’m not really into gadgets and don’t even have a smartphone! But I like to have a small sketchbook with me. I don’t like the drawings in my sketchbooks but it’s a good tool to collect little ideas.
