Who are you?
Rubio & del Amo is a studio focused on the creation and management of brands, books, packaging and other objects intended as solutions for communication through design and creativity.
The studio was founded in Murcia in September 2014. Both of us had done a degree in Advertising and Public Relations together and after almost ten years working separately for other studios we decided to set up a project together in order to defend a very clear idea of design and how to live by it.
It all started in a bar (the Tremolo), as is always the case in Spain. When the idea came up to set up a studio we both had a beer in hand, but a few days later we swapped it for a coffee and when we saw that it kept making sense we dived in. We've known each other since high school where we worked together at a youth association in the city on small cultural projects based on the world of image, so we already knew that the team worked, we just had to turn it into something solid.
Your current job:
We are a small studio and we both work hand in hand in all the processes of the studio: clients, design, production, invoicing...
In which city are you located?
In Murcia, Spain.
One of the cities with the most days of sunshine per year in Europe. Last year we hit 47 degrees Celsius and this makes you look for the shade at all costs.
What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc.) :
Our fundamental tools are our brains and our intuition. We work with all five senses, analyzing all the information given to us by our clients and our surroundings in order to transform it into well-resolved projects. Internet is a good ally as it gives us a lot of information, but wine or bars at times are better tools. Software and equipment are necessary elements but they don't essentially affect our way of working.
What does your office space look like?
Very cool, hahaha. We moved here a few months ago and we love our new studio. It's located in an emblematic street of the city (Calle Correos) between the Cathedral and the Bullring.
It's a roomy, bright place with two spaces: one diaphanous workroom where four of us work on an L-shaped table and a meeting room which we use for going through things with the clients, taking photos of products, eating, and above all enjoying the beautiful balcony.
What kind of music do you listen to when you are working?
We change according to the day or the project we're working on. A few names: Sigur Rós, Cobolt, Screeching Weasel, Standstill (one of the greatest groups in the history of “made in Spain” music), The New Raemon, Los Planetas, Philip Glass, Camarón de la Isla…
Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work?
Not especially. We organize ourselves more around our projects and then the day works itself out on its own.
What tips would you give to improve productivity?
To have all the information necessary for a project, to speak to the client and within the team (face to face; the human touch is fundamental), to make a solid proposal and defend it to the death and to go for an aperitif on Fridays (that's when the great ideas are born).
You're better than your colleagues at:
I don't really know if we're better than our professional colleagues at anything, but if there is something that we look for it's a global vision of our projects and a direct and intimate relationship with the people we work with, be it clients or suppliers.
What is the best advice anyone has given you?
We don't tend to get that much advice from others, but last year a client said to us, in reference to himself, “misery brings misery” and I'm not sure how much that has affected us, hahaha.
What is your best tip for saving time?
Cycling to work.
What is your routine start and end of the day?
Every day is different. There are days that we're in meetings all day, others that we're designing almost exclusively and others that we're doing the accounts, writing up invoices, estimates, etc.
Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not go without?
We're not really gadget people though we are kind of magazine fetishists. Whenever we're in Barcelona or Madrid we buy interesting-looking magazines to add to the collection at the studio.
