Building upon Building : Architecture as evolution instead of revolution

Building upon Building : Architecture as evolution instead of revolution

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

In a time when more and more architecture looks as if it was realized without taking its context into account, 45 contemporary European architects accept a challenge: to design a fictional extension of a building in line with the principles of the existing building. The result: Building upon Building, a series of relevant dialogues between contemporary architects and the past.

New generation

Jantje Engels and Marius Grootveld, editors of this publication, present a new generation of European architects with the question: how can insights into the historical city be intertwined with stories of the past? This question is explored and answered in 45 designs and four essays. Architecture as evolution instead of revolution.

Fictional architectural solutions

Building upon Building provides fictional architectural solutions to existing issues. The book Building upon Building shows how a new generation of European architects work with a renewed appreciation of history. Included are designs by Dutch architects as well as creations from architectural firms from Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
