Beau’s Brewing Co. is re-releasing the “blonde edition” of its award-winning Tom Green milk stout, called Tom Green Summer Stout. The seasonal release will be sold on tap and by the bottle in Ontario and Québec beginning in late April and will be part of Beau’s summer beer line-up for 2018.
Tom Green Summer Stout is an intriguing juxtaposition of appearance and experience, meaning: it looks like a golden blonde ale, but drinks like a stout. It is brewed using a light-roast barley malt and flaked oats, as well as lactose, the sugar that gives milk stouts their signature mild sweetness. The beer is cold-aged on certified organic cacao nibs and a medium-roast organic coffee, infusing a brilliant, clear golden ale with stout-like aromas. Mocha flavor notes are supplemented by subtle berry nuances, and the finish is mildly sweet and lingering.
The coffee used in Tom Green Summer Stout is both certified organic and Fair Trade Certified roasted locally by Ottawa’s Bridgehead Roastery. It comes from the Piendamó region of Colombia, where a cooperative of about 1,000 very small farmers produce it. Ian Clark, Director of Coffee at Bridgehead, notes that there are relatively few producer associations in Columbia using organic and advanced sustainability practices, which he adds makes it a pleasure for them to bring this unusual coffee to Canada.
First brewed in 2017, Tom Green Summer Stout won a Bronze in the Experimental Beer Category for Canada that year at the World Beer Awards. It is part of a revolving series of milk stouts brewed by Beau’s in collaboration with Canadian actor and comedian Tom Green. The Beau’s kitchen team suggests pairings of Tom Green Summer Stout with go-to backyard BBQ fare such as arugula and fennel salad, grilled venison sausage with red pepper marmalade, and Mascarpone cheese tiramisu.
Tom Green Summer Stout will be stocked and sold at Ontario and Québec retailers beginning this weekend, with an official launch date of April 26 at the Beau’s Brewery in Vankleek Hill. The original (and also award-winning) Tom Green Beer milk stout that has been available for winter will go on a hiatus while the Summer Stout is sold, so fans of “Tom Green Classic” are best advised to stock up on remaining supplies.
