If you have always fantasized about being a fashion maven, you may have wondered if your dreams could actually come true. Although it may seem like a lofty goal, it is not impossible to start your own fashion line. There are a few steps you should follow to get your name out there and let people see your designs.

Before you go out and buy a single spool of thread, you should come up with a business model. You will be more successful if you go in with a well thought out plan.

Find Your Niche

Knowing who will want to wear the clothing in your fashion line is key to your success. Will you sell oversized jackets and knee-high boots to girls in their twenties or will you sell high-end business suits? will you market your line to people in the city or people in the suburbs? 

The better you understand your customers, the more able you will be to curtail your products to them.

You should also figure out where you want to sell your products. Do you want to open an online store, sell your products at small boutiques, or market your clothing to big stores like Macy’s?

Look for a Need

As with any business, the less competition you have the better. You should look for an untapped area of the fashion world. There I plenty of cocktail dresses marketed to young women who are size sixes and eights. Why don’t you created a dress that will flatter a rounder figure and that will look good on a woman who was born before Clinton took the oath of office? 

If you market your product to young people, be sure to keep costs low. They do buy a lot of clothes but they tend not to have much money. 

Design Something Simple an Affordable to Introduce Yourself to the Public

You want your first design to be something that will give people a good idea of who you are and what your brand is all about. You also want to make sure that the product is simple, affordable, and easy to buy.

If you think your customers will be young and hip, you may want to make a shirt with a sarcastic phrase on it. If you think they will be middle-aged moms from the suburbs, you may want to design a shirt with a quote that is intended to inspire them.

Decide What You Will Call Yourself

Unless you are already well-known, you may not want to name your clothing line after yourself. You should pick something that evokes the spirit of the line without being too on point. If your designs tend to run to the traditional, you can name the line after a classic drink,  film, or pop culture figure. “Monroe” will probably be an easier name to remember than “Vintage Clothing.” 

If your style is edgy, stay away from using the latest slang. Pick a word or phrase that suggests excitement. A play on words such as London Britches or Bee Free is always a good idea.

When you market your clothing, you will want to use social media skillfully. Put your product up in places where you think people will see it. Post it to groups on Facebook that you think your customers might join. You may want to offer your product at cost for a while. 

Starting your own fashion line is hard work, but you can minimize your cost and risk with a little advanced planning.
