Office tale of Ben Young, glass artist/boat builder

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :
Ben Young

Your current job :
Glass Artist/Boat Builder

In which city are you located?
Sydney, Australia

A word to define what kind of worker you are :
Hands-on

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)
Google maps, I’d be lost without that. I like Instagram as another creative outlet. Apart from emails I don’t really need the computer or like to use it that much!

What does your office space look like?
My office is more like a mans shed. It’s small and pretty raw with concrete floors and exposed brick. It’s all I need to do what I do though. It’s more of a work shop where I can make a lot of noise and mess.

What kind of music do you listening when you are working?
Mainly indie and old rock, just mellow stuff that plays in the background so I can still focus on what I’m doing. If I start fading I will put something heavier on to keep me amped and going.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work?
Plan your day in advance and order it relative to the importance of each task.

What tips would you give to improve productivity?
Lists keep me on track and lets me see my productivity which gets me even more motivated. I love crossing shit off a list!

What is the best advice anyone has given you?
Love what you do, work hard and make mistakes.

What is your best tip for saving time?
Plan. If you know what your doing you can just get stuck in. Time lines are really good also, that way you get done what you need to each day.

What is your routine start and end of the day?
I wake up and make my wife and I breakfast, when she leaves for work I head out to the studio. In the evening I finish up around 5.30 to get dinner ready (got to keep the bread winner happy). I will often go back out to the studio after dinner for a couple more hours if I’ve got more things to finish off.

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not go without?
Glass Cutter and my 35mm camera.
