How to Pack Furniture for Moving

How to Pack Furniture for Moving

Published by Programme B

Although exciting, moving can feel quite overwhelming. There is a lot of physical work involved, and if you do not hire packing services, it can be very tasking. But the stress could be easier with the help of a full-service moving company like High Stream Moving

Packing furniture is one of the main components of moving, especially if you are moving long-distance and you are not using movers. All you need to do is to prepare the right materials and carefully wrap your furniture to ensure their safety.

The key idea is to try to disassemble the big furniture, if possible, before wrapping to ease the process. Also, add more protection layers if the item is fragile.

Part 1: Make a Plan

  • Determine the furniture you can take apart. Not all furniture can be disassembled. So check your furniture to see which ones can be taken apart. Especially check the fragile and highly valuable pieces as it is easier and safer to move them disassembled.
  • Take pictures of these items. Since you will need to put these back together, it is advisable to have reference pictures. You might need them.
  • Prepare packing supplies. You might need bubble wrap, plastic wrap, packing tape, mattress covers/blankets, etc. You can get these from your local hardware store or moving company store.

Part 2: Disassembling Large Items

  • The sofas. Depending on the type of your sofa, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to disassemble the pack each part separately.
  • The desk chair. Most desk chairs a pretty straightforward to disassemble. You just need to turn the knob on the bottom of the seat to the left until the seat separates. Now squeeze the base together until it is as small as possible.
  • The table. Put the table in a way that you have access to the table assembly hardware that holds each leg in place. Use a screwdriver to unscrew each leg off.
  • The bed. Remove the headboard and footboard to begin taking apart your bed.
  • Dressers and desks. Remove all the removable pieces from dressers and desks.

Part 3: Wrap your furniture

  • Use blankets and furniture covers to cover the furniture. Use old blankets or buy/rent packing pads/blankets from a moving company store to cover your furniture.
  • Do the same to the furniture legs. If you removed the legs before packing, do not forget to wrap them also.
  • Use plastic wrap to secure the covers. Use a plastic wrap on top of the blanket or pad to keep it tightly in place.
  • Add cardboard on corners of big and sensitive items. After wrapping use cardboard pieces on corners on tables, dressers, and desks. Also, if you have glass tables, add a generous amount of cardboard on the tabletops and secure it with packing tape.
  • Use bubble wrap for fragile items. Cover delicate items with bubble wrap.

Part 4: Dealing with Small or Fragile Items

  • Use cardboard and tape to wrap your mirrors. Make X on the front side of each mirror – this helps keep the mirror from shattering. Then use cardboard on the edges of the mirrors and secure them with masking tape.
  • The television. Use a blanket or an old cloth to wrap the blanket and secure it with plastic wrap before then adding Styrofoam blocks on top.
  • Use newspaper to wrap the lamps. Remove the lampshade and bulb from each lamp before wrapping them in newspapers and secure with tape.
  • Cover your bar stools with bubble wrap. Since it is not easy to disassemble bar stools, wrap them with bubble wrap and secure them with tape to avoid damage.
  • The baker’s rack. Cover your baker’s rack with blanket/pads and secure it with packing tape.
  • Cover the cabinets. Use blankets/pads to cover empty cabinets and secure them with tape.

Part 5: Load your moving truck

  • Pack evenly to avoid trouble driving. Ensure not to load most of the heavy items on one side of the truck. This could make it difficult when driving.
  • Utilize mattresses and other soft items to keep fragile items safe. Even after you have already wrapped them, mirrors and picture frames can still shatter at the slightest impact. Place them in between mattresses for extra protection.
  • Load couches vertically. Load couches and loveseats vertically. This is a trick that most moving service companies use to maximize space.

Secure the furniture with packing straps. Most packing service trucks come with straps to help you tie together your belongings. If not, you can ask the agent to provide
