Rockwell is the founder and President of Rockwell Group, a multi-disciplinary architecture and design practice. Named as one of Fast Company’s most innovative design practices, the firm crafts a unique narrative for an array of projects including hospitality, lighting, retail, healthcare, education, institutional, entertainment, interactive and theatre. Rockwell will talk about his lighting, hospitality and design projects at the 2014 show.
Rockwell Group projects include the TED theater (Vancouver, BC), W Hotels (New York, Paris, Singapore, and Vieques), Grand Central Terminal, Nobu restaurants and hotels worldwide, the Elinor Bunin-Munroe Film Center at Lincoln Center; Imagination Playground (Burling Slip, Betsy Head Park, Imagination Playground products); set design for the 2009 and 2010 Academy Awards, the Marketplace at JetBlue’s T5 terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport; Google projects worldwide; exhibition design for the Center for Civil and Human Rights (Atlanta), Tower D and Culture Shed at New York’s Hudson Yards in collaboration with Diller Scofidio + Renfro; set design for Kinky Boots, Lucky Guy and Hairspray; and products for The Rug Company and Maya Romanoff.
David’s numerous honors include the 2008 National Design Award by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum for outstanding achievement in Interior Design; the 2009 Pratt Legends Award; the Presidential Design Award for his renovation of Grand Central Terminal; induction into the James Beard Foundation Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America; Interior Design magazine’s Hall of Fame; inclusion in Architectural Digest’s AD 100; three Tony Award nominations for Best Scenic Design; and four Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Scenic Design of a Musical.
