The fifth edition of Monocle’s super-yacht-sized newspaper, Monocle Mediterraneo, will hit newsstands on Thursday 24 July. Four years since its debut – and the ninth seasonal broadsheet alongside its winter partner, Alpino – it’s further evidence of Monocle continuing to grow its print offering.
With a record number of advertising partners and an increase of 39 per cent in subscriptions since last year’s edition, Monocle Mediterraneo will be available in 110 markets across the globe, with expanded presence in Spain, Turkey, Greece, Australia and Malaysia.
On newsstands for eight weeks, Mediterraneo is 68 pages of beach-inspired fun – and this year docks its editorial remit a little further off the Med, with stories from Rome and Montijo.
In a Mediterraneo first, Monocle has commissioned a piece of original fiction. Anne Zouroudi, author of the Hermes Diakatoros crime series, has penned a murder-mystery thriller, set in the Greek isles. It is exclusive to Monocle Mediterraneo and will be accompanied by audio programming on Monocle 24.
Other highlights of Monocle Mediterraneo 2014:
— We experience the expertise of Portugal’s 751 Squadron at close quarters with a visit to Air Base No 6 in Montijo. The team is charged with patrolling a huge area of land and sea and has saved more than 3,000 lives to date; we witness them flex their search-and-rescue capabilities.
— Monocle names 10 brands ripe for a comeback on a shore near you. From a portable record player and Lambretta scooter through to a floating swimming barge and raffia fedora, we invite an overhaul of our favourite summer designs.
— Greece is famous for its ancient amphitheatres – so it seems fitting that its open-air cinemas have become so popular. Monocle visits three and meets the inspirational people behind them.
— A bar crawl around the Med: very much in the spirit of his drinking travelogue, ‘the Wet and the Dry’, author Lawrence Osborne points out a few of his favourite spots for a restorative tipple.
Plus: a trip around the Italian pop dancefloor from past to present, a look at some of the Med’s best architecture, the latest on fashion from Florence, a sexy Spanish sojourn into a day in the life of the Palma de Mallorca marina and a visit to the new scent capital in Barcelona caps off the fifth issue.
