Office tale of Luke Lucas : creative, art director, illustrator, designer and typographer

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :
Luke Lucas

Your current job :
I’m a Freelance Creative

In which city are you located?
I’m currently living about an hour’s drive north of Sydney, Australia

A word to define what kind of worker you are :
Happy. I love my job.

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)
Coffee Machine, Mac, Camera, Creative Cloud, Pencil, Paper

What does your office space look like?
I work from home so I don’t really have an office as such. It’s really a bedroom without a bed in it. It’s bright and has some nice windows.

What kind of music do you listen when you are working ?
It depends on my mood, the time of day and the type of work that I’m doing. I tend to make my own playlists every few weeks and they’re generally a pretty eclectic mix of new and old stuff but sometimes I prefer to listen to albums from start to finish.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work ?
As a freelancer it’s rare that I’ll know what I’ll be working on more than a few days in advance. Deadlines are often tight and if I don’t meet a client’s expectations there’s a chance I won’t get paid so if I’m not careful stress can creep in which can be really damaging to the creative process. In terms of maximising my work or as being as efficient as I can be I need to make sure that I’m in a good head space before I start working so that means keeping stress levels in check first and foremost. I meditate and surf (if the conditions are suitable) every day and that keeps me pretty level headed and best equipped to do my work.

What tips would you give to improve productivity ?
Your phone and computer can be hugely distracting so when you’re working give yourself a couple of windows a day to check emails, surf online and use your phone. Outside of the designated time ignore them as they’re massive time sappers.

You’re better than your colleagues to :
Not sure… I’m better at being me I guess

What is the best advice anyone has given you ?
Don’t sweat the small stuff

What is your best tip for saving time?
Ssee above re productivity

What is your routine start and end of the day ?
It’s rarely the same everyday so I’m not sure that I have a routine. I guess the only constant thing is that I meditate in the morning when I get up. I try to in the evenings if I can also but it depends on what else is happening and what my wife and kids are up to.

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not go without ?
Aside from my phone and computer I don’t really have any gadgets that I’d be lost without. I love my coffee machine so maybe that… i dig the Sonos as well so maybe that too.
