Office tale of Tess Copeland, graphic designer

Office tale of Tess Copeland, graphic designer

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :
I’m a graphic designer and dog lover, I’m still figuring out the rest.

Your current job :
I’m currently working as a freelance graphic designer. This means I get to work on lots of different projects, everything from web design to wedding stationery.

In which city are you located?
Melbourne, Australia. The birthplace of Kylie Minogue, dim sims and the eight-hour day!

A word to define what kind of worker you are :
Meticulous

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)
Pen, paper, iPhone, computer, InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.

What does your office space look like?
Bright with a collection of little treasures and all my tools at arms length. There is generally a stack of graphic design books and magazines that I’m working my way through, I just got back from a trip to Japan so some are still in their plastic!

What kind of music do you listen when you are working ?
70s soul and R&B, Diana Ross and Al Green and French Yé-yé when I want to get my Francophile on.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work ?
I like to get up early and start work by 9. I prioritize what needs to be done first and then continue working through my to do list.

What tips would you give to improve productivity ?
Firstly, delete Facebook (trust me, it’s great!). And overall, be a sponge and absorb everything around you. Keep your eyes open, try new things, watch documentaries, listen to others, have meaningful conversations and never stop learning!

You’re better than your colleagues at:
Not better, just different. I try to learn as much as I can from my colleagues. Everyone has their strengths and there is always room to improve.

What is the best advice anyone has given you ?
Life is a sausage machine.

What is your best tip for saving time ?
It’s not really a time saver but a prevention for time wasting that I use on any task I can’t afford to spend a lot of time on. Set a timer to go off every 10 minutes. I use my iPhone alarm on Duck as it is impossible to ignore! I got the idea from Skrekkogle’s Durr watch. http://www.skrekkogle.com/#durr1

What is your routine start and end of the day ?
I wake up and check my emails and the cute dogs of Instagram. At the end of the day I plan what I’m doing tomorrow, rest and repeat.

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not go without ?
A USB.
