Office tale of Søren Rose, principle designer at Søren Rose Studio

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :
Søren Rose

Your current job :
I’m the principle designer at Søren Rose Studio

In which city are you located?
New York City – TriBeCa

A word to define what kind of worker you are :
Designer

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)
Quick sketches on paper when analogue but also use the App Paper with the pencil they designed which I love.

What does your office space look like?
It’s pretty tight curated, we have a ton of architecture, art and design books, samples, prototypes, 3D models, drawings and photographs of all ongoing furniture and product development. We are currently also working on a book about the studio so one wall is dedicated to the index and content of the book.

What kind of music do you listen when you are working ?
I can with certainty say that we have the most diverse music taste in New York, we have Sonos installed with Spotify – and take turn surprising each other. I’m currently getting off on a project where I’m trying to establish the 25 best Jazz albums of all times, that means listening to hundereds of great albums, my goal is that once I establish the 25 albums – I’ll try to buy all the in Vinyl and buy a gramophone player – but still have much more research before that happens.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work ?
Unfortunately at least 50% of my day is e-mails with different manufactures and partneres, I dream about having a couple of days a week without e-mails. I can be very productive when I really have and get all the boring administrative tasks out of the way which all creative agencies has to be bothered with.

What tips would you give to improve productivity ?
Don’t be afraid to delegate tasks to your colleagues, most creative think they have to do everything by them selv (because they can do it better) the truth is that someone else can easily do the same thing – they will just do it differently than you would have – so ask for help.

You’re better than your colleagues to :
Make coffee, bake cakes, delegate work, choose music – the list is long – there is a reason why I’m the boss 😉

What is the best advice anyone has given you ?
The truth is always somehow in the middle – it always worked well for me when in a disagreement

What is your best tip for saving time ?
We have a saying think twice cut ones – it’s so easy to change details on renderings and shop drawings and so difficult when the final product is build.

What is your routine start and end of the day ?
I love my drip coffee – with out my daily doses of Drip I’m a zombie. Before I go to bed I have this thing with watching a show from a random TV series, could be anything really, The Walking Dead, The Wire, Fargo, Breaking Bad – it really calms me down and makes me forget about prototype, manufactures, clients and everything else that I fill my day with.

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not you go without?
This is becoming a full disclosure interview. I actually have a weakness for my PS4 – I rarely have time to play – but occasionally when there is a new titel out I might spent a rainy sunday in the couch.
