Office tale of Hvass & Hannibal, design studio

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :
We are Hvass & Hannibal, a small Danish design studio, consisting of Nan Na Hvass & Sofie Hannibal – plus Yuki the all-important office dog.

Your current job :
We are currently working on the new identity for The Conference by Media Evolution in Malmø, August 2015. We are also working on some illustration jobs.

In which city are you located? :
Copenhagen

A word to define what kind of worker you are :
Imaginative and thorough

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..) :
The Adobe programs and our Wacom boards.

What does your office space look like ?
We have a two story shelving system with a built in loft bed, this is something we always dreamed of having before. Our furnishing is generally white, since our work adds all the colour.

What kind of music do you listen when you are working ?
Mostly none, and then for shorter periods we listen to same thing over and over until we have killed it, and almost can’t listen to it anymore. This has happened with bands like the Hidden Cameras, or Cocteau Twins. Plus the bands we’ve designed album covers for.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work ?
When we are very busy and juggling many projects at the same time, we make a very precise schedule of the day, and how much time to spend on each project.

What tips would you give to improve productivity ?
Sometimes, setting an alarm can be very helpful to really get you focussed. So for instance you could say: OK now I have an hour to brainstorm on this problem, and if you know there’s a clock ticking, it can force you to get things down more efficiently. Also, having a good cup of tea at your side is important.

You’re better than your colleagues to :
Pay attention to detail.

What is the best advice anyone has given you ?
Pay less attention to detail.

What is your best tip for saving time ?
Not answering emails immediately, but taking them in larger groups at certain times. Otherwise it can easily happen that you are answering emails all day, like answering these questions for instance :—)

What is your routine start and end of the day ?
Checking the status on social media – as Jody Barton very nicely put it: Staring at your reflection in the shiny shiny internet.

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not you go without?
Wacooooooom
