The School of Making Thinking’s 2015 Summer Programs
Apply by March 1st
The School of Making Thinking (SMT) is simultaneously an artist/thinker residency program, an experimental college, and a nomadic investigation in intentional living. Our mission is to create a unique environment where participants are able to develop a creative practice that challenges disciplinary conventions of art-making, thinking and living. Our program asks: How does art deepen thought and provoke questioning? How is thinking enacted through creative mediums? And how can an environment be structured (or resist structuring) in such a way that these questions can not only be asked, but be lived as well?
For the Summer of 2015 we will be leading a 5-6 day group hike at the end of May in the Catskills, along with two, 3-week residencies throughout the months of June and July. The residencies will take place in a beautiful old B&B (The Yellow House) in upstate New York.
This year’s hike “A SUMMIT ON A SUMMIT 2” will feature two groups of artists-in-non-residence who will hike similar paths and meet in the middle (on a summit). Along with the creative joys of hiking, this mobile conference of creative individuals will enable participants to give both pre-planned and spontaneous creative presentations.
Session A of our 3-week residency programs is called “RE-RE-MAKE: AN IMMERSIVE PERFORMANCE LAB” and will offers artist/thinkers of all mediums the opportunity to meld performance into their creative practices via a process of intensive making and re-making. This session will include: “response art pieces”, participatory rituals, experimental audienceship, etc.
Session B of our 3-week residency programs is called “TIME AS STRUCTURE: TEXT AS SUBSTRATE” and will offer artist/thinkers of all mediums an opportunity to work on a creative project that grows out from a close study of a single primary source text of their choosing. This session will be highly structured and unstructured to include: idea-manifestation workgroups, guest artists, reading groups and field trips.
All of our programs aim to give residents an opportunity for rigorous thinking and making that will feed both individual and collective creative practices.
