Office tale of Michael George Haddad, freelance Illustrator and designer.

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :
Michael George Haddad

Your current job :
Freelance Illustrator and Designer.

In which city are you located?
Ottawa, Canada

A word to define what kind of worker you are :
Quick, yet considered.

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)
My brain. Sketchbook and pencil. Adobe usual suspects.

What does your office space look like?
I share studio space with several other freelancers: design, illustration, and motion all represented. The space is on the third floor of a large, historical Ottawa home.

What kind of music do you listen when you are working ?
GG and the Jabbers, dark synth, the soundtrack to Far Cry: Blood Dragon by Power Glove, the soundtrack to Blade Runner by Vangelis.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work?
Everyday is different, so it’s difficult to have a routine while freelancing. I’m not the most organized person, so I like to start everything as soon as possible. I need a sense of urgency to work.

What tips would you give to improve productivity ?
I’m more productive when I’m busy. If I’m not busy, I’ll procrastinate, so in slower times I’ll work on personal projects. Also, I’ve learned multi-tasking doesn’t work, and brainstorming in a group doesn’t work.

You’re better than your colleagues to :
I’m fairly independent at the moment, so nothing and everything!

What is the best advice anyone has given you ?
Style is great, but ideas and concepts are more important.

What is your best tip for saving time ?
Don’t wait to start. Take a break if you get stuck. Sleep on it: you’ll dream of a great idea, or at least unclog your brain.

What is your routine start and end of the day ?
I start with coffee and a BIG breakfast, so I don’t need a big lunch (which would make me tired in the afternoon). At the of the day I’ll watch some cat videos, and send them to my friends.

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not you go without?
I don’t really have anything else that would be considered a gadget! Maybe my turntable?
