Office tale of Alexandre Mercier, designer

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :
My name is Alexandre Mercier, I’m a freelance graphic designer. I specialise in branding, cultural design and user interface design. My second biggest passion is music. I compose and participate in various musical projects.

Your current job :

In which city are you located?
Gatineau, Canada.

A word to define what kind of worker you are :

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)
Adobe Creative Suite, Cinema 4D and Cubase.

What does your office space look like?
My office is normally organized and yes, my sound monitors take up a lot of space but they are essential !

What kind of music do you listen when you are working ?
Three kinds of music depending on the task at hand or how I feel. Electronic, video game and film scores, and Post-rock / Progressive-rock. Currently, I listen to artists like Home, Bonobo, Todd Terje, Puscifer, Jaga Jazzist, Marriages, Lunatic Soul and Com Truise.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work ?
Every morning, I will write a to-do list beginning with the small tasks and finish with the big ones. I will always begin the day drinking my coffee and taking notes when I need a fresh perspective on a particular project.

What tips would you give to improve productivity ?
The principle of having lists is essential to me. A master list organized by priority and a sub- list for each of them. A time estimate for each task will always help me keep track on how the day is going.

You’re better than your colleagues to :
Make them laugh. I am usually the weirdest person in the room.

What is the best advice anyone has given you ?
There are people who have a job and others that have a vocation. Always keep in mind that enjoying what you do is very important since you will do it for most of your life, forty hours a week.

What is your best tip for saving time ?
Do a good graphic research for each client and present the different approaches before beginning the design part.

What is your routine start and end of the day ?
First thing in the morning, I drink my coffee, listen to some music to establish the mood, and check my emails. At the end of the day, I look at my to-do list for the next day and then relax.

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not you go without?
My drum set and my midi keyboard for composition and jams ! My camera is also a must.
