Office tale of Nikkie aka Little Paper Forest, illustrator and paper artist

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you:
I’m Nikkie aka Little Paper Forest. I’m a full-time illustrator and paper artist.

Your current job:
I’m currently an illustrator at Thought Café, an animation studio in Toronto (best known for their work on Crash Course).

In which city are you located?
I’m in Oakville but soon to be in Toronto!

A word to define what kind of worker you are :

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)
Sketchbook, Photoshop, Illustrator, tablet, paper, scissors and my iPhone.

What does your office space look like?
Clean and spacious… at the studio anyway. My home workspace is a little more chaotic.

What kind of music do you listen when you are working ?
Recently I’ve been listening to Flight Facilities – The Decade Mixes and I’m really into Pleasurekraft at the moment.
I like to listen to movies or documentaries sometimes too, I find it helpful to keep track of time.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work ?
I usually start the day pretty early and stick to a schedule. I like to make lists of what needs to get done.

What tips would you give to improve productivity ?
Tea breaks are essential. A clean, organized space and good music.

You’re better than your colleagues to :
I think I’m learning much more from them than they are from me. 😉

What is the best advice anyone has given you ?
“Doubt kills more dreams than failure”.

What is your best tip for saving time ?
Organize your time wisely, set deadlines and leave room for mistakes.

What is your routine start and end of the day ?
I wake up early, commute to Toronto, work 8 hours at the studio, commute home, try to fit in some personal work, eat and sleep. My weekends are usually dedicated to personal work; gallery shows, illustrative anthologies and I vend at the odd comic convention. 🙂

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not you go without?
I would need at least one Nintendo console! Either my 3DS or WiiU for Smash Bros or MarioKart.
