Office tale of Alex Mikolajczak, illustrator and graphic designer

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you?
I’m an illustrator and graphic designer. I have been working in this industry for past few years. My background include not only art, but also science. I received my master’s degree in cosmetic science and cosmetic chemistry, where in this field I worked as a college teacher.

Your current job:
I’m currently a freelance  illustrator and graphic designer

In which city are you located?
I’m based in Toronto, Canada.

A word to define what kind of worker you are:
Problem-solver.

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)?
I use various apps, but mostly Manga Studio, Photoshop and Illustrator.

What does your office space look like?
Clean and organized.

What kind of music do you listen when you are working?
It depends on what kind of project I’m working on, but to be more specific: movie soundtracks, jazz, soul and something with “futuristic vibes”- cyberpunk and electronic music.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work?
I use Emacs org-mode. It’s the best way to keep myself focused at work.

What tips would you give to improve productivity?
I think, productivity is better, when you are organized. Of course taking short breaks helps a lot, especially, when you don’t feel very creative, or when it feels like you are making very little progress. Take a break and try to do something else like read book, manga or go for a little walk – it always works for me.

You’re better than your colleagues to:
I’m making my own bento, ha ha!

What is the best advice anyone has given you?
Be yourself.

What is your best tip for saving time?
Organize your day, make a to-do list.

What is your routine start and end of the day?
I usually get up around 7:00am, have a breakfast and coffee. I really enjoy coffee in the morning, and now it’s like a ritual – freshly grind two kinds of beans( sometimes with a little bit of cardamon) and brew in the French press. Then I go for a walk and when I get to my office, the first thing I do, is check my emails. I start working around 9:00am. At the end of the day I write the next day’s to-do list, and if the weather is good I go for a walk.

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not you go without?
My camera, bento box and thermos. I really love to walk and travel, but i hate to be hungry, so I always carry home made lunch with me.
