1814 magazine is a biannual publication that focuses on photography, art, design and culture by bringing together the best artist and photographer around. Interview with the editor Michael Thomas
Can you tell about us, about your magazine
1814 MAGAZINE is a limited edition, bi-annual publication that focuses on photography (fine art and documentary), art, design, and culture. We wanted to create a publication that features works by established and emerging artists, and one that allows the artist to tell their story in their own words. 1814 MAGAZINE feels like a personal guided tour through a gallery or exhibition space.
1814 MAGAZINE is dedicated to providing a platform for artists that may not be able to have their voice heard or find an outlet in traditional commercial publications.
Print: Why choose print? What kind of paper you use and why? Typography?
Contrary to popular belief print is not dead. There is a segment of the market that collect photo books and photo magazines. This audience craves a nicely printed piece on good quality paper. At 1814 MAGAZINE we print on a 100 lb paper stock and use a customized Didot typeface.
How’s the public response?
Our response has been very positive. 1814 MAGAZINE has a dedicated following in a growing number of cities around the world. It is interesting to note that 73% of our audience is between the ages of 18 and 44… a young demographic for an artsy subject matter.
Business: Good print mags get a lot of love, but is not always translated to sales or advertising. How’s the sales? Advertising wise, is it a normal approach of selling an ad page or more a brand ad approach?
1814 MAGAZINE does not accept advertising within the covers of the publication in order to preserve the integrity of the works we present. This advertising free approach is reflected retail price. We do however offer a printed advertising supplement that is packaged with the magazine and available online.
1814 MAGAZINE also publishes exhibition catalogues in cooperation with artists and galleries. We are working on a few photography books by artists featured in 1814 MAGAZINE that will be released in 2016.
