Office tale of Thomas Pisz, 3D Artist

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :
Salut! I’m Thomas. A 3D Artist who loves eye candy. I’ve got a bachelor Degree in Communication Design but i was always more passioned about Photography.
I started taking Pictures with my dads’ SLR by the time i was 13 or 14.
I reacently met the love of my life, got married and moved from Hamburg Germany to Montreal.
Now here i am.

Your current job :
Funny Story… Usually i’m freelancing. But right now… i’m waiting for my immigration papers to finally being able to write bills again. In the meantime i am studying a lot profession related stuff and do one personal project after the other.

In which city are you located?
Saint-Constant, Montérégie. But i always say Montréal. Sounds better.

A word to define what kind of worker you are :
autodidact

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)
My number ONE is the cellphone.
Besides communication with family, friends and customers i need it for every kind of social media.
My Facebook Feed mainly consists of profession related stuff and visual inspiration blogs.
I follow various creatives on instagram, pinterest and YouTube.
From the moment on i found passion in 3D i didn’t hold a DSLR in my hands.
Thanks to my phone i am still shooting a lot and keep practicing composition this way.
Besides a strong PC i can’t go without my WACOM Tablet. I am way faster and precise with a pen than a with a mouse.
To improve overview i have a second monitor. Usually i keep my references constantly open on this one.
I’m thinking about buying a third one since i am always running out of space…
When it comes software… Essential for me is Dropbox. It’s so convenient and works on every plattform.
Huge communication improvement between me and a client.

What does your office space look like?
I recently moved to Canada and reside in the basement of my parents in law. So… for offices standards it’s a mess.
Thanks to my wife it is a lot less messier then it used to be. She’s way more patient than me and reorganized it for me. Thank you, bébé!

What kind of music do you listen when you are working ?
I became a big fan of songza.com. “Drum ‘n’ Base Workout”, “Fantastic Voyage” and “Today’s Indie Dance Hits” are my current favourite playlists. Besides that i am letting my Youtube Favourits play all day. Everything from the Beatles up to Riff Raff (lol)

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work ?
Daily task goals works fine for me. Besides that i plan the whole day with a tight schedule.

What tis would you give to improve productivity ?
Daily workouts. Do sports to keep the brain fresh and working. That’s my basis for being able to soak up daily inspiration.
That fires me up the most.

You’re better than your colleagues to :
If i ever should be better than my colleagues… this would mean that i have gotten lazy.
I always try to surround myself with people that know more or better than me. That’s a kind of a self motivation that drives me further. I need to have people around me to feed off their passion and professionalism.
A daily reminder that there’s much more work to do for me.

What is the best advice anyone has given you ?
Regarding my profession:
“Everything is reflective” – Thank you, Markus Lenz. One of first big eye openers during my beginnings in 3D.

Regarding life i can’t think of one right now.
In case i am allowed to hand one out:
– be grateful
– cut out the bullshit (negative people)
– eat healthy and work out

What is your best tip for saving time ?
– Work smart AND hard
– Try to cut out every repetitive action by setting up a preset for it
– Pen first, then mouse. Wright or sketch everything down you plan to create
– Focus on one task at a time
– Shortcuts, shortscuts, shortcuts…
– Keep your hardware up to date

What is your routine start and end of the day ?
6:40 AM: Checking Mails
7:00 AM: Workout
8:00 AM: preparing wife’s coffee and breakfast
8:15 AM: Breakfast, checking social media for daily inspiration
9:00 AM: Work
