Office tale of Joluvian, multi-disciplinary graphic design

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :
My name is Joluvian, I’m a multi-disciplinary graphic design – Calligrapher, Lettering, Illustrator and recently Painter (the people say I’m an artist, but I’m not too sure about it)

Your current job :
As a freelancer in my studio with my dear business partner Mauco Sosa

In which city are you located?
I’m’ located in Madrid, Spain (I’m from Venezuela).

A word to define what kind of worker you are :
I’m a passionate and I really LOVE what I do. Most of the time, I feel so excited while I’m working.Sometimes, insane, creating different, and several things at the same time.

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)
Spotify, Wacom Cintinq, Photoshop, Illustrator, light table, scanner A3, brushes, nibs, pencil, ink, papers, etc.

What does your office space look like?
Little by little, we are creating a common space in our special crib. Infusing it with the best energy,, and with good friends, who come and go. Honestly, it is becoming one of my favorite place in all of my life.

What kind of music do you listen when you are working ?
OMG heavy question. My music taste is too, when I say “too” it is “Too wide”. I could start my workday with one good song called
Good morning by Debbie Reynolds, Gene Kelly & Donald O’Connor

After that some cumbia like Chico Trujillo from Chile, then some electronic music maybe Drum and Bass, RnB, Rock, Romantic, Ska, Boleros, African music, spanish music, etc etc. Non stop… Spotify is one of the most wonderful music app, where you can go so deep and find any kind of music which can touch your fiber to convert a normal day in a exciting day.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work ?
Mmmm another heavy question, lol. I really try to organize and structure my day. First, I need to have a good breakfast. I love to eat. Then, I have to study English. Before heading to the studio, I have to go to the gym in the morning. But not too early, like I was doing years ago (around 6am at morning). The gym helps me to disconnect, to breath deeply. To concentrate and give oxygen to my brain, because when I get to the studio, I’ll be working a lot of hours, creating different things. I usually work in my studio between 12pm to 12am 😉

What tips would you give to improve productivity ?
Organization means to do all the things that you and your body needs to be balance. So don’t forget that having a life is part of your work. Even more when we demand such much of our brain… GO party, often.

You’re better than your colleagues to :
I do not consider myself better. I love to learn from my colleagues, and everyone; even the doorman of my studio building (he’s a really great man from Ecuador). I’m open to learn what the world wants to give. Everyday we have the pleasure of learning something new. So, I don’t consider myself bette. Because, I’d know that my life will be so boring if I thought that way.

What is the best advice anyone has given you ?
Go away and do nothing…

What is your best tip for saving time ?
This question can have 2 answers, depending on where you are at.

Let’s say you are in in a good and creative position, working very well, like everything is on the way. Keep doing that! Enjoy it, and try to develop further l as you can.

But (because most of the time we always have a ‘but”) if you don’t feel like “Yujuuu I’m in the top of the world” don’t feel bad you don’t need to save time, you need to enjoy the time, because life wants something better for you, but (yes I know another but) pay attention of what do you want, what are you looking for from your life and this life? It’s like a movie with some advertisement implicit, the ads could be the Life’s warnings. Those warnings are appearing in our life several time to tell us “Hey you! Over here there is something better for you”

Get balance folks!

What is your routine start and end of the day ?
I already answer this question above, but I can add something else and easy to visualize it:
• Good breakfast (Break, eggs, ham, cheese, tomatoes, fresh orange juice and a green tea)
• Study English
• Gym
• Prepare my lunch while and having a healthy snack
• Go to the studio
• Say hello to everybody (studio neighbors)
• Answer mails, check FB, IG, Behance, dribbble, etc)
• Lunch
• Work
• Another snack
• Work
• Dinner
• Work
• Maybe painting at home, reading or watching some tv show or movie.
• Go sleep

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not go without?
I think the computer and the phone are more than enough to get crazy, in this madness of actual life, around the world.
