The ninth edition of abc art berlin contemporary will take place September 15 to 18. Founded by a group of Berlin galleries, abc has established itself as a format that places a refreshing focus on the artist. Each year, national and international galleries are invited to present solo presentations of artists within the unique atmosphere of Berlin.
abc has returned to Station Berlin, whose centrally located exhibition spaces reflect key characteristics of the city—a passion for experimentation and openness to evolution and change, enabling abc’s continual development and transformation. The exhibition architecture has played a key role from the start, and for the second time, it will be designed by the office of Johanna Meyer-Grohbrügge. Following the successful realization of cross-shaped wall elements in 2015, this year’s space-defining and structuring principle will be realized with u-shaped fixtures, enabling the option for spaces with three interior walls, individual exterior walls, and freestanding presentations in intermediate spaces.
The close connection between artists, gallerists, collectors, and curators in the city is also reflected in the program’s special exhibition, which brings private collections into cooperation with abc for the second time.
This year sees the inauguration of support for abc by Outset Germany. Beginning with this edition, exceptional artworks will be acquired each year at abc to be donated to a museum collection. The Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin will be the first recipient of this gift.
abc is partnered with Berlin Art Week for the fifth time, connecting the exhibitions on view at the Berlin museums and institutions. A particular highlight this year will be joint activities in connection with the closing weekend of the 9th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, presenting special programming at its various venues.
