Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

The Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival marks its 20th anniversary in May 2016. To celebrate this milestone, an expanded program focuses on 20 Primary Exhibitions at major museums and galleries plus 20 Public Installations at sites across the city. From enduring practices to new forms of expression, the Festival showcases a diverse range of photo-based works by Canadian and international artists.

Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival has a widespread impact throughout the city, bringing together Toronto’s museums, galleries, public spaces and alternative venues to celebrate photography. Darcy Killeen, Executive Director of CONTACT stated, “This year we are excited to have an impressive line-up of Canadian and international artists including Thomas Ruff, Alex Soth, Vikky Alexander, Barbara Astman, Angela Grauerholz, Rodney Graham, Raymond Boisjoly, Mickalene Thomas, Maurizio Cattelan & Pierpaolo Ferrari to name a few.

Stephen Bulger, Cofounder of CONTACT said, “The phenomenon of photography merits both study and recognition — a cause taken up by the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival, which has descended on Toronto every May for the last 20 years with an expansive event showcasing photographs by artists both local and global.”

“I am honoured that my work will be showcased as a primary exhibition at the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival at the Ryerson Image Centre this year,” said Angela Grauerholz, winner of the 2015 Scotiabank Photography Award. “This Festival is known around the world for increasing the exposure and recognition for local, Canadian and international artists and for cultivating creativity and innovation in photography.”

Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival is the largest photography event in the world, and a premiere cultural experience in Canada, with over 1500 artists in 200 exhibitions and happenings throughout the month of May in the Greater Toronto Area. Founded in 1997, CONTACT is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to celebrating and fostering the art and profession of photography.
