Márk Kertész, graphic designer

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you:

Hi everyone! I’m Márk Kertész.

Your current job

I’m a freelance graphic designer with more than 10 years of experience, and in the past I spent years working for great design agencies.

In which city are you located?

I live and work in Budapest, Hungary. Our co-working studio is in the hearth of Budapest, surrounded by hospitable restaurants and pubs. I’m glad that almost every day I can enjoy the view and attractions of this colourful city when I ride my bike to work.

A word to define what kind of worker you are :

Grateful. -What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..) The most essential tools for my job are the Adobe products i.e. Ps, Ai, Id, FL. And of course the Behance app.

What does your office space look like?

I work in a very cosy co-working studio with couple of other independent freelance graphic designers and a photographer where we have the opportunity to lay on the sofa if the coffee does not want to kick in. We don’t have fancy game room, but on our street there is a lovely retro pub where we can play snooker, foosball or chess.

What kind of music do you listen when you are working?

I have a pretty mixed taste for music, and here are some of my favourites:Michal Zygmunt- Na Kujawach Pięknie GrająPaolo Conte – Via con meC.W. Stoneking – The Love Me or DieHazmat Modine – BahamutAnd I like to listen to one of the best rev up album (Limp Bizkit-Chocolate Starfish And The Hot Dog Flavored Water) for an extra energy boost when my batteries are drained at the end of a long day.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work?

I do spend time every evening planning my next day, schedule my projects, activities, set priorities. I put special emphasis on planning before I start the actual work, hence I browse Behance and other websites a lot for inspiration.

What tips would you give to improve productivity?

Stand up often, get moving, exercise at least 2-3 times a week, read a lot, travel. In addition, know yourself, know which part of the day you are the most creative and carry out the most important planning tasks at that time. The less weighty tasks are there for the rest of day.

You’re better than your colleagues to:

Everybody has his/her own share of strength, therefore, we often ask each other’s opinion on specific projects. Thus much is certain that one of my biggest strength is to naturally understand my client’s needs and know what they want. This helps me to execute the job much quicker and more efficient.

What is the best advice anyone has given you ?

Do what you love.

What is your best tip for saving time?

Know, understand your customers’ needs, and spend more time on brainstorming and planning.

What is your routine start and end of the day ?

After waking up I make and have my breakfast calmly. After that, either I ride my bicycle to my workplace in half an hour or I stay at home to work. In this morning period I do not think about work at all because I will have the rest of the day to do so. Evenings are always eventful: girlfriend/ friends/ self-development/ reading/ work/ inspirational studies/ free time.

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not you go without?

My bicycle and my sunglasses on sunny days.
