San Francisco’s iconic Anchor Brewing Company will sell to Japanese brewer Sapporo for $85 million.
Anchor’s distilling division is not included in the deal and will become a separate entity. The brewery, which opened in 1896, was acquired and revived by Fritz Maytag in 1965 and subsequently sold to Keith Greggor and Tony Foglio in 2010. While Sapporo now owns the full company, brewing operations will remain based in San Francisco. Anchor representatives would not comment on any impact the deal may have on the status of the brewery’s stalled Pier 48 expansion. – SFGATE (source: Inside.com)
