Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :

I am Gemma Mahoney, I am a graphic designer and also a student finishing up my last semester of uni.

Your current job :

Over the past two years, I have been working while completing a Bachelor of Communication Design, so it been a busy time. About two years ago I started working as a production artist for a smalls newspaper monthly. I have also been interning/working for an amazing studio called Confetti. It has been such an amazing opportunity to work alongside these guys and have them mentor me while I finish up study. In my last year at Confetti, I have grown so much as a designer, and I am so excited to start full-time design work.

In which city are you located?

Melbourne, Australia

A word to define what kind of worker you are :

Dedicated

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)

Other than the obvious, InDesign, illustrator and photoshop. I love having a notebook and diary to write down all my thoughts and I live for lists.

What does your office space look like?

My personal workspace is in my bedroom, I am lucky it’s big. I like my space to be super clean so that my mind feels fresh. I also like to be surrounded by nice things, like plants, art, and books.

What kind of music do you listen when you are working?

I like to put on random playlists or even put my iTunes on shuffle. Jazz is always great.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work?

Lists! At the start of any day, I will write a list of everything that I would like to complete. I find it incredibly satisfying completing tasks and crossing things off, I think I may be a little addicted.

What tips would you give to improve productivity?

I really do recommend lists and utilizing a diary. I think it’s important to have objectives for a day and plan to complete things by certain dates. I find being super organized and on top of things is the best way to avoid stress.

You’re better than your colleagues to :

Drinking tea. When it’s winter all I want to do is drink tea, I drink about 5 cups a day…

What is the best advice anyone has given you?

This is hard one, I don’t think there is anything big that comes to mind. But I do have this memory from when I was a child being told that I always have to work harder than others but always get there in the end. I think really drives my motivation, always striving to improve and do better.

What is your best tip for saving time?

I think planning out all your priorities and attempting to complete them efficiently.

What is your routine start and end of the day?

I always get up early enough to start my day by 9. I firstly like to start by making sure my room is super clean. I then begin by writing a list for the day and get to it straight away.

If I am at work on a uni I generally come home and cook dinner then will get things done on my computer till about 9. When I am home I am generally glued to my computer.

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not you go without?

Does Instagram, Pinterest, and Bechance count? I really love to see what work is out there and follow design blogs and studios. I find it super inspiring to see amazing work out there, it motivates me to work even harder.
