Who are you and your current job :

My name is George Kanellis and I’m the owner of Discobole record store. A small but timeless indie record store located in the center of Athens, Greece. Discobole’s journey started in 1983 as a result of my love and passion for the vinyl records. I decided, then, to open a store that will focus on the electronic music genre such as house, trance, progressive, psychedelic, drum&bass among others. However, as years passed, our focus as a store shifted to cover all the music genres and lately we have given an extra interest

in rock, jazz-funk, and hip-hop vinyl.

In which city are you located?

We are located in the heart of Athens, Greece’s capital.

What musical styles do you specialize in?

We are electronic music specialists but we pretty much cover every genre with our passion. Every day we are trying to discover new artists and releases to introduce our clients to. Our e-shop ( is up and running and filled with hundreds of releases from around the world.

Can you give a small tour of the music scene in your town?

Athens is on the rise! I believe the economic crisis has functioned as a trigger to produce more music and more inspiration for our music scene in Athens. Especially on rock and hip-hop bands. People are realizing that tough times need good music! =)If you visit Athens, come to our store and we will schedule together a series of fun gigs to go to!

What’s it like working in a record shop?

It’s a lot of work but a creative process on the other side. You have a lot of problems to face especially if you live in a country with a constant economic decline. However, we’ve started it because we love music and vinyl and that feeling keeps us going!

What mind-blowing album are you listing right now?

Judas Priest – Firepower! We’re really rocking the place! You can find it available here:

What does it take for an indie record shop to survive?

We must embrace technology change and embrace it. Not fight it. At the end of the day, it’s all about vinyl. It’s always been about vinyl.

Tips for musicians launching an album?
