4 Things You Should Know Before Buying a Used Land Rover

Published by Programme B

Land Rovers have always been fan favorites, thanks to their sleek exterior, versatility, and their luxurious, yet discreet appeal. But they sure aren’t an impulse buy. Owning a Land Rover, even a used one at that, is a commitment, and there are a few things you’ll want to have known first. While they have their fair share of great features, they can get expensive over time, and you’ll have to be ready to spend to keep it in good shape. So, it’s important that you do your research before you buy one. Here are a few things you should be aware of before you buy a used Land Rover.

Be Ready to Spend

If you’re upgrading from something like a Tahoe, or an Accord, then get ready for things to get a bit more expensive. We’re not talking about the sticker price here. Regular maintenance like oil changes will also get more expensive. Repairs, in general, will also require more time, as these are very sophisticated vehicles with complex components.

It’s also important that you know what goes into maintaining the vehicle to reduce the chance you’ll have to go to the garage. This includes how and when to change things like differential and gearbox fluids, for instance. Also, make sure that you buy your used Land Rover from a reputable source – a dealer preferably. You’ll be able to get a clearer picture of the car’s history in most cases and be able to check service reports to see what has been done and what may need to be done soon.

Models You Should Avoid

On the surface, all Land Rovers might look similar, but choosing the wrong model could cost you even more. Some require more maintenance than others and are known for having issues. The P38A for instance, while being very stylish, is notoriously difficult and costly to maintain. This model is known for having air suspension issues and oil leaks. Discovery 2s are also very popular but have been known to have head gasket issues, which can be expensive to repair.

Models to Consider

On the flip side, some models are known to be lower maintenance and a better option if you want to avoid repairs and reduce costs. The L322 is a great option as parts are readily available, and it doesn’t have a lot of mechanical issues. The Land Rover Velar is also a great option. It’s a huge step up in reliability and is one of the most fuel-efficient Land Rovers you’ll find.

Get in Touch with Other Owners

One last piece of advice we’re going to give you is to join the Land Rover community and get in touch with other owners. This way, you’ll know what to expect and get a few tips from others who’ve been there and done that. They’ll be able to advise you if you’re having issues, and give you tips to avoid them in the first place.

Land Rovers are great vehicles, and a great investment, but they do need some love. However, if you treat them right and know what to expect, they can be managed and a pleasure to ride and own.
