Can you tell us about your background and your company?

Based in Hillsborough, N.C., Big Spoon Roasters was founded in 2010 by Mark and Megan Overbay. Mark was first inspired to make his own peanut butter while in Zimbabwe where he was a Peace Corps Volunteer and adapted a local method of roasting peanuts over open fires and pounding them into a thick paste. After Mark returned home, he and Megan started handcrafting nut butter and snack bars from scratch with world-class ingredients sourced directly from local and like-minded producers who share a dedication to authentic quality and sustainability.

Big Spoon believes that our food choices matter and pursues a mission to build a healthier relationship with our planet through delicious, nutritious foods made without compromise. They now sell six varieties of nut butter bars, 20 different handcrafted nut butter as well as other specialty items, including Wag Butter – Peanut Butter for Dogs, or nut butter for our furry friends.

The company’s products have won numerous statewide and national awards, including a Specialty Food Association’s 2022 sofi™ Awards, a top honor in the $170.4 billion specialty food industry, a Whole Foods Market Supplier of the Year honor, and being named a 2023 Good Food Award finalist.

Any news products?

Within the last year, the company launched a new Big Spoon Roasters Crunchy Peanut Butter made with Hubbard Peanut Company’s premier peanuts. This peanut butter is the first to combine both high-oleic Runner variety peanuts – for an ideal base – with Hubs Virginia variety peanuts – for the quintessential crunch. It’s truly a peanut lover’s dream.

Each quarter, Big Spoon Roasters releases a special limited batch. This quarter, it is Blueberry Granola Almond Butter, which will be available online until June 30. This fruit-forward nut butter features a smooth almond butter base, crunchy granola, dried Michigan blueberries, pure blueberry powder, and toasted macadamia nuts, all perfectly balanced with organic Vermont maple syrup and Jacobsen sea salt.

What kind of clients or partners are you looking for at SIAL?

Big Spoon Roasters is looking for like-minded, Canada-based importers, brokers, and distributors to partner with us in our work to introduce more people to truly handcrafted, small-batch nut butter that is good for people and the planet. We receive a lot of inquiries from Canadian retailers, but without the right distribution relationships, we are not able to supply them.
