With Jean-Luc Marchand, co-owner at Broadway Microbrasserie
How long have you been brewing beer and what are the core values of your brewery?
The microbrewery opened in 2006, but I have been the owner since 2017. Personally, I have been brewing since the age of 18, and I am now 40 (phew) haha. Family values, respect (both interpersonal and respect for raw materials), and eco-responsibility are emphasized in our company.
What are the main types of beer you brew? We brew thirst-quenching beers, with Lagers taking a prominent place in our production, including Czech Pilsner, Vienna Lager, and Corn Blonde Lager. Of course, IPAs like our Splash NEIPA and West Side IPA still hold a significant position in our brewer Alexandre’s repertoire. We also make room on our 15 tap lines for a coffee stout (La Barista), wheat beer (Hefeweizen), red ale (Mary Poppins), as well as a rotation of Berliner Weisse (Les Fruits du Hasard Fresh Coco) with fruit.
What makes your beer unique?
A discerning consumer would recognize the water from Shawinigan. Additionally, we use malt from the malting facility “Le Maltraiteur” in Trois-Rivières. We strive to choose ingredients that are local to us, and respecting local ingredients is a priority. The grains are grown and processed on the outskirts of Shawinigan.
Are you bringing any special beer to the Mondial that we should try?
Our brewer Alexandre would recommend the Baltic Porter, his favorite beer. As for me, I would highlight our Czech Pilsner, of which we are particularly proud. If so, what is it and what can you tell us about it?
What are your plans for the future?
We want to refocus on our local market, our pub, and our retailers in Mauricie who have been supporting us for 17 years. We will, of course, continue to distribute in Quebec, but our main focus will be on building local partnerships within our community.
