Office tale of Alessandro Puccinelli, ocean photographer

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you:
Alessandro Puccinelli

Your current job:
Ocean photographer

In which city are you located?
I’m located in Pisa (Italy) and in Lisboa (Portugal) but mainly in my motorhome along the Portuguese coast.

A word to define what kind of worker you are
Romantic

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)
A camera and a couple of lenses, a water-housing to take photos in the ocean, a good water resistant bag to take photos of the ocean from the beach during big storms, a laptop, Capture One software, a tripod, a strong filter for the lenses and a lot of patience.

What does your office space look like?
It depends where I am. As I’m staying more time in the van than at home these days, I can call it my office space as well, in fact I’m answering to you from my van. So my office space, with a few variations can also be, my dinner table, my bed at night, my sofa to relax. It’s made out of a nice and comfortable sofa, a table, some draws inside the roof where I keep hard drives mixed with my clothe and big windows on each side from where I usually look at the ocean.

What kind of music do you listen when you are working?
When I take photos I usually listen to music and it may vary, it really depends on my mood at that time. Last time when I photographed a stormy ocean, I was listening to Metallica, but usually, when I’m in front of the ocean is more “piano”music, like Thelonious Monk, Keith Jarret or Ludovico Einaudi.
When I’m at the computer, I like to listen to bands such as Gorrilaz or Royksopp.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work?
No, I haven’t, but I found that 10/20 minutes of meditation early in the morning works well to energize the day.

What tips would you give to improve productivity?
To fully concentrate at one thing, the most important at that moment

You’re better than your colleagues to:
To take it easy, well I guess in these days I’m better at photographing the ocean I guess

What is the best advice anyone has given you?
When you get really upset with someone, take a few big breaths before taking any decisions.

What is your best tip for saving time?
I don’t know. I’m not good in saving time in the meaning of business time. I found that anytime you dedicate time to yourself instead of just working, you ended up being a faster worker.

What is your routine start and end of the day?
I don’t like routine. Having said that, recently I decide to put more disciple in my daily life. In these days is meditation in the morning and whatever I feel to do before to go to bed, many times when I’m in the van, the last thing I do is to take a photo of my van on the beach.

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not you go without?
Aside from them, none, except my camera of course.
