Office tale of Gastón Pacheco, character designer and illustrator

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :
I´m Gastón Pacheco.

Your current job :
I work as a freelance Character Designer and Illustrator.

In which city are you located?
I live in Mendoza, Argentina.

A word to define what kind of worker you are :
Creative.

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)
Paper, pencil sketch and ink are my ‘go to’ tools. I also work in the digital domain, most of my drawings are finished with a few touches of software processing. I use Photoshop, After Effects, 3D Studio Max, TV Paint…

What does your office space look like?
LOOK LIKE ES ‘A QUÉ SE PARECE’ O ‘COMO QUÉ LUCE’
Well… it looks like more like a vivarium than an office, I´m surrounded by plants. I have an open space to stay confortable and a big desk to draw.

What kind of music do you listen when you are working ?
It depends a lot on the mood of the project I´m involved with ATM, sometimes I just enjoy the silence to be more focused. Usually I don’t have a specific preference for working, I listen to a lot of music, like Air, Zero 7, Hauschka, Dirty Projectors, Queens of the Stone Age, Melvins, Led Zeppelin, Tame Impala, Grizzly Bears, YMCK, and so on.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work ?
Lately I just turn off everything, I´m disconected for a few hours of my phone, social networks, chats… just being away of every distraction helps to maximize my work, not any extra organization skill is needed.  It helps me to stay focused during the creative stages of a project.

What tips would you give to improve productivity ?
I think every one could improve productivity just by being aware of the method or path that suits better their own creative processes, how every one feels more confortable, or developing some kind of logic to follow. We all have to look for that path by ourselves, and the way to do it is just working hard, trying a lot and making some mistakes I suppose.

You’re better than your colleagues to :
Make quick handmade sketches.

What is the best advice anyone has given you ?
Enjoy the process, put a lot of effort during the trip, not being so worried about the forthcoming stages or the final shape. If the process goes well, a nice result will arrive for sure.

What is your best tip for saving time ?
Being rested to be more efficient, working trying to avoid stress or chaotic schedules.

What is your routine start and end of the day ?
I like to start my day with a nice and BIG breakfast. Some days I end my routine just taking a walk, others playing with my band or meeting some friends to hang around.

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not you go without?
I´m not exactly gadget dependent. I always carry a small notebook, my pencil and a rubber.
