Office tale of Milja Korpela, designer

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :
Milja Korpela. I’m a Finnish graduate in packaging & graphic design in Lahti Institute of Design, Finland. A constant dreamer with a huge passion towards aesthetics.

Your current job :
Packaging & graphic designer at Iceland Ocean Cluster and also a freelance designer, with main focus on user experience and brand identities. I’m currently working as a graphic designer e.g. for Scintilla ltd as well.

In which city are you located?
Reykjavik, Iceland

A word to define what kind of worker you are :
Conscientious

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..) ?
Mcbook pro, Fiskars scissors, my camera, the thinnest pen you can buy

What does your office space look like?
A busy wooden table with everything and everyone around it. During the day it’s a chaos but when I leave I always like to tidy up my place. I’m working on two desks during the week so this is the other one, in a beautiful open space with high ceilings.

What kind of music do you listen when you are working ?
I don’t often listen to my playlist while working but when I do, it’s usually indie electro. That’s the very little I know about categorizing music. Ratatat and Isaac Delusion are my long time favorites and at the moment I’m in love with Boardwalk and Juniore. It’s great if I learn good music from my colleagues.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work ?
Starting a little later in the morning works for me. Taking a cappuccino break, nap or an inspiration walk in the afternoon and continuing again late in the evening suits my schedule. What comes to organizing tasks I’m always ticking to-do lists during the day.

What tips would you give to improve productivity ?
Work intensively and relax as intensively, both 100%. Sometimes surprise yourself by doing something unusual before starting the day. In wintertime I used to go to a hot geothermal pool to watch the sunrise when the town was still asleep (this is what I love in Iceland).

You’re better than your colleagues to :
Extremely tiny handwriting

What is the best advice anyone has given you ?
Always reach higher than you believe.

What is your best tip for saving time ?

Don’t take a break before you’re done. Also focus on finding out carefully what the customer wants.

What is your routine start and end of the day ?
My day starts with yoghurt and ends too late.

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not you go ?
Lipstick
