Office tale of Landon Larsen, senior brand designer at Property Solutions

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :
My name is Landon Larsen. I’m from Utah and I’m 25 years old.

Your current job :
I’m a Senior Brand Designer at a software company called Property Solutions

In which city are you located?
I work in Lehi but the closest known city would be either Salt Lake City or Provo, Utah.

A word to define what kind of worker you are :
I’m a thinker. I spend a lot of time researching and tucking away little tidbits of inspirational things that I feel will help me with something soon or later on. And I have lots of conversations with myself about the projects I’m working on; thankfully mostly just in my own head and not talking out loud ;).

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)
The creative suite, definitely. The internet. Notebook. Pens. etc.

What does your office space look like?
I have cool posters/postcards from artists I admire. A couple of family photos. Inspirational publications and design books. Other garb interesting things. Basically just things that I wish I had made – that way I can work towards making things I’m proud of.

What kind of music do you listen when you are working ?
Ummm this…? Imma just add it here if I likes it’s a pretty wide range of stuff, but while working I like things such as El Ten Eleven, Chvrches, The Knife, alt-J, most other Scandinavian stuff.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work ?
Not really. I’m still trying to figure that out. Basically I tell myself, “I have to get this done today, not matter what” and then do it.

What tips would you give to improve productivity ?
I think if you spend your down time educating yourself on your work, be that reading or cruising the web, you’ll be all that more prepared to do the next project and you’ll do it more quickly and efficiently. I like to think of Paula Scher when she designed the Citi Bank logo. She went to one meeting and sketched it on the paper right there. Everyone was astounded that she could just be done like that; they wanted it to take more time. Basically she said it was done in 30 seconds and 30 years prior to that of research and practice.

You’re better than your colleagues to :
Research and constant study – then again, I learned the habit from some of them.

What is the best advice anyone has given you ?
That’s a tough one – The one coming to mind right now was my dad telling me to, “Work hard, play hard and rest hard.”

What is your best tip for saving time ?
Research. I feel like people will do a lot of work, show it to their client or boss and then turn around and have to do it all over again because they didn’t do any research and therefore had no way of backing up their decisions, even if they were good ones.

What is your routine start and end of the day ?
Forcing myself to get out of bed – my wife has to make me most of the time. I don’t know what it is, but I’m always so unbearably tired in the mooring – I need to remedy that. As far ending my day… I have to clear my head and unless I put on a tv show or movie (usually something I’ve already seen) I can’t clear my mind enough to fall asleep.

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not you go without?
If we’re talking “gadgets”… That’s tough – My phone and my computer are pretty much all I need gadget wise – I guess next in line would be my iPad because I use it a lot for watching a show during lunch or something unless I’m with people. Ya, my phone and computer suffice my gadget needs for the most part.
