Office tale of Pascal van der Haar, art director & designer at ISOBAR Melbourne

Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :
Pascal van der Haar. A dutchie living in Australia

Your current job :
Art Director & Designer at ISOBAR Melbourne

In which city are you located?
Melbourne, Australia. Officially the best city in the world.

A word to define what kind of worker you are :
I work like a duck. I’m smiling and looking relaxed on the surface but underneath it all I’m a hard working, motivated designer.

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)
Photoshop, Sketch, In vision, pen and paper.

What does your office space look like?
My office space is really messy and disorganised. But like any good share-house its not about how it looks but about how much fun is being had on the inside…and I share my workspace with a bunch of rad, creative people everyday.

What kind of music do you listening when you are working?
Hip Hop or singer-songwriters…depends on the mood I’m in.

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work ?
I’m not really an organised guy in general but if I know I have alot to do then I like to wake up early, get a coffee and smash out as much as possible in the morning.

What tips would you give to improve productivity?
Don’t stress, relax and just keep going. Try and enjoy the moment.

You’re better than your colleagues to:
Speak Dutch.

What is the best advice anyone has given you?
Focus on the things you love doing.

What is your best tip for saving time?
Start a project by doing heaps of research for inspiration and idea generation before you start to execute. 75% of my work-time is spent on thinking. 25% is actually designing.

What is your routine start and end of the day ?
Don’t really have a routine and in fact I’ve never really had a routine in my life. But if I had to make a routine up that I could abide by for the rest of my life it would be something like this: Surf when the sun comes up, get a coffee and start designing until productivity drops…go for another afternoon surf, catch up with some friends over a few beers, go to sleep….

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not you go without?
My surfboard and campervan.
