We are delighted to announce an exhibition comprising the full suite of Donald Sultan’s Dominoes aquatint etchings from 1990. This 28-piece set is typical of Sultan’s playful use of representational, everyday objects as abstract forms – in this case the simple graphic quality of a set of dominoes.
For this exhibition we will present an interactive installation. Following the rules of a traditional dominoes game, the highest double domino (6/6) will initially be hung on one wall of the space. The remaining 27 works will be available for audience members to select and place next to the starting domino, one per day, during gallery hours. The installation will build over time, resulting in a game of dominoes that will unfold over the course of the exhibition.
Donald Sultan came to prominence in the 1980’s with a series of Disaster Paintings, 12 signature works, which are now the subject of a major traveling exhibition; currently on veiw at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Donald Sultan, b. 1951, Asheville, North Carolina, lives and works in New York City, is more recently recognized for his simplified representations of still life subjects, including lemons, pomegranates, tulips, roses, and poppies.
His work is included in most prominent public collections, including the Broad Museum, Los Angeles; Cincinnati Art Museum; Cleveland Museum of Art; Dallas Museum of Art; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh; and Parrish Art Museum, Water Mill, New York.
