Published by Leonardo Calcagno

Who are you :

I’m Julien, born 2 november 1979 on suburb of paris and i’m Graphic designer at full time by day and working for pleasure and freelance at night.

Your current job :

Graphic Designer in print (brochure-brand-icons etc…)

In which city are you located?

I live in Paris suburb (Montfermeil) and work in Paris

A word to define what kind of worker you are :

What tools are essential to your life (app, software, etc..)

My sketchbook and my pen, always to start.

In my personal work as you can see on Behance : Illustrator 90 % and Photoshop for the rest. Illustrator is my favorite and only tool, just use photoshop for some details (color/lilttle bit texture) I prefer to use one and learn-progress in one discipline only. On my daily job : Indesign (90% also) 🙂

OSX, i admit an addiction with this, i use it since Mac os 8.6 and i never return to Windows (actually i use a Macmini)

I use also a little Adobe Capture and Shape to capture texture sometime (but is very rare).

What does your office space look like?

My office space is very empty. I need to work like this. Just some print on my wall of my friends Flüke and Craniodsgn, 2 of my favorites artists : Niark and Jared Nickerson and my better artist : my son.

What kind of music do you listen when you are working ?

When i work i’m very concentrated, i don’t listen music. But if no i listen all sort of music like Flamenco, rock, reggae, classic, Electro, And Hip-hop. Like in art, in music : no border 🙂

Do you have a way to organize your day to maximize your work ?

Not really, i have more a process to work. Quick sketch on paper > Clean sketch > Vectorisation > Few photoshop. I work always like that on my illustrations.

What tips would you give to improve productivity ?

In first, to work hard, and test many disciplines, to find what you like. And when you have find what you like do, work to find your own universe. Is a long way, but is more easy to produce when you have find your way. Take pleasure in what you do is essential for me. (I speak about my personal experience)
At the beginning i wanted to make logos, icons, brochure, web……More i worked more i wanted to illustrate. Today i just want to do vector illustration and nothing else.

In second, watch and watch the works of others to be inspire and learn.

You’re better than your colleagues to :

I’m better to make jokes 🙂

What is the best advice anyone has given you ?

I don’t receive advice 🙂

What is your best tip for saving time ?

Work on paper before to start on computer. Many times i have lost time, to adjust-correct- delete- remplace colours because my sketch or my base work was bad.

What is your routine start and end of the day ?

When i start : Read mails, looks the socials networks, drink a coffee.

At the end just to say goodbye at my colleagues^

Aside from your computer and your phone, what gadget can you not you go without?

Have no gadget except my smartphone !
