Muwin Estate Wines produces quality wines and ciders in Nova Scotia. Makers of Bulwark alcohol-free cider, made from their signature five-apple blend, this flagship drink has all the refreshing, crisp taste of cider but without the alcohol.
We chat with Germain Bergeron, owner, and founder.

Can you tell us about your background and your company?
Muwin Estate Wines is an award-winning owner-operated craft cider and fruit wine producer. The company operates two locations including the winery at 7155 HWY 12 in New Ross and a Cider House at 1518 Dresden Row in Halifax.
Muwin’s two key brands are Bulwark craft ciders and Muwin fruit wines. Muwin’s Bulwark craft ciders were awarded the best product of the year 2016 in its category by the Nova Scotia Liquor Board. Muwin has also won several medals including gold medals at the prestigious Canadian Brewers Awards and Great Lakes International Cider and Perry Competition in Michigan, USA. Over the years, Muwin has successfully exported its products to various markets including the United States, Germany, UK, China, South Korea, and Taiwan.
Muwin’s Bulwark handcrafted cider reflects our values: natural ingredients, exceptional taste, and outstanding craftsmanship. Our quality fruits are harvested from the Annapolis Valley known for its fertile soil and unique micro-climate. Muwin is one of the few cideries in Canada that handles everything in-house. Apples brought to the cidery are juiced on site and slowly fermented, resulting in a natural cider that’s never made from concentrate. The result is a premium balanced blend of sweetness, acid, and tannins which is bottled on site.

How has your company and industry changed, because of the pandemic? Any new opportunities? any new way to do business?
It’s been difficult times. Everything that we read about staff turnover and supply chain management issues is true.
What can we expect from your company at the SIAL?
To celebrate its 10th year anniversary, Bulwark Ciders successfully launched its first non-alcoholic cider in the Fall of 2021.
Crafted using a special fermentation technique, our non-alcoholic cider appearance is exactly like a sparkling white wine with fine effervescent bubbles. On the nose, it has a subtle apple aroma and a hint of fermentation notes that confirm a slight alcohol content. On the palate, it is crisp with sweet undertones and a light astringent finish. All in all, it is a well-rounded beverage that tastes just like the real thing. We are currently sold in Atlantic Canada through various retail stores including Loblaws as well as wholesale distribution through Sysco.
